Students ‘think they should pay less rent’

Students ‘think they should pay less rent’
Students living in the private rented sector (PRS) think they should pay less for their home, according to new research.

A survey carried out by Easyroommate found close to two-thirds (65 per cent) of students think they should not be charged as much as their professional counterparts, with the majority believing it would be fair for people at university to pay 20 per cent less.

Major cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds were all cited as locations where respondents think students should be charged lower rent.

Easyroommate spokesperson Maya Harruna told Property Reporter: “It’s not surprising to see that students think that they deserve to pay less rent than professionals. Being a student is becoming more and more expensive with tuition fees, travel and food costs increasing year on year.”

Easyroommate’s survey also found a growing number of people are choosing to live in house and flat shares. It said this form of accommodation has grown 32 per cent since the organisation started keeping records, with students the main driver behind the increase.

Close to half (45 per cent) of the people who have found a house or flat share through the website are undertaking a masters. The high cost involved with this type of degree is believed to be the reason why these individuals are opting for this more affordable form of accommodation.
