Rental sector ‘needs one million more homes’

An extra one million rental homes are required in the UK by 2021, according to a new report.
A study carried out by the University of Cambridge concluded this is necessary if the country is to avoid a major housing crisis.
It claimed there is already a shortfall of 30,000 homes when it comes to properties that are below the market rental price and can be afforded by people who receive housing benefits and have low incomes.
The report said the situation is most severe in London, where an additional 190,000 homes of this type are needed.
Jack Dromey, the shadow housing minister, claimed the government is to blame for this problem.
He commented: “This is yet more evidence of the biggest housing crisis in a generation. The government’s failure is having dramatic consequences for people all over the country.”
However, housing minister Mark Prisk told the Independent over 420,000 social homes were lost while the last Labour government was in power and stressed the coalition is planning to build a large number of affordable houses in the near future.
